The city of Aarenau itself has simple reasons for its name. In the Rhumish language, "Aare" is the word for a single bird, with the word "Adelaare" being the word for eagle - or "noble bird". The city's origins lie in a double-headed eagle landing on a rock, which was taken as a divine augury and provided the basis for the name of the lake upon which the city was built, <b>Lake Aare</b>, the Lake of the Bird. The second part of the name -au, is a common Rhumish place name suffix, typically meaning "town" or "settlement on". And so the name Aarenau quite literaly translates as "Town/Settlement on the Lake of the Bird". |

Aarenau or officially the Serene Principality of Aarenau is a theocratic absolute monarchy which dominates the Eastern Rhael region in the Eastern half of the world. The Principality is headed by the religious and political head of state, the Serene Prince of Aarenau, and Shepherd of Man of the Holy Flock of Agdarr, also known as Agdarrism. The Principality is an absolute monarchy; however, it is legislated and controlled by the city council of Aarenau - the Master Council, which is comprised of many commoners as well as nobles - as well as the Prince's Council of Ministers.
The Principality currently consists solely of the city of Aarenau, which stands as the most eastern settlement in the world, and dominates the nature around it. The city, built around Aarenau Palace (Rhumish: Aarenauer Pfaels), which was historically the original settlement of Aarenau on the island in the middle of Lake Aare, from where the city derives its name, has developed further out around the lake and along the River Rhael.
The Principality is controlled by the absolute monarch that is the Serene Prince of Aarenau (Rhumish: Serenzfaerst um Aarenau), who is seen in the Agdarrian Faith as the appointed monarch of Agdarr's people. The Prince traditionally reigns in an enlightened fashion, taking counsel from both his Princely Council of Ministers, which includes the Great Officers of State, as well as the Master Council of the City, which includes all Guildmasters.
The Principality was formed after the legendary Prince, Theuderik - to whom the Holy Flock claims he was the physical incarnation of Agdarr, and to whom the var Maereltsyns descend - led the Rhumish people from their historical homeland across the seas into this new land, finding the lower Rhael and following three river spirits, the Rhaelmaidens, north until the lake and island were discovered, and where a double-headed eagle, a symbol of divine providence, landed upon a rock in the middle.
Etymology
The Serene Principality of Aarenau, named after the city of Aarenau itself, derives its name from two places:
Historically, the foremost Rhumish Prince, the descendants first of Aeor (such as Theuderik), and now the descendants of Theuderik, are referred to as the "Serene Prince" (Rhumish: Serenzfaerst) due to the state faith - the Holy Flock of Agdarr - regarding the Rhumish Prince of Aeor and Theuderik's line as the sole ruler holding a divine right. Historically, in the ancient Rhumish homeland, the Serene Princes took a greater title above all other Princes, that of Keistarr - derived from the ancient familial surname of the var Maereltsyns: Cestar. This title is loosely akin to an Imperial title (Emperor), and descends from ancient Pyrrianorian conceptions of Imperium and Translatio Imperii.
The city of Aarenau itself has simple reasons for its name. In the Rhumish language, "Aare" is the word for a single bird, with the word "Adelaare" being the word for eagle - or "noble bird". The city's origins lie in a double-headed eagle landing on a rock, which was taken as a divine augury and provided the basis for the name of the lake upon which the city was built, Lake Aare, the Lake of the Bird. The second part of the name -au, is a common Rhumish place name suffix, typically meaning "town" or "settlement on". And so the name Aarenau quite literaly translates as "Town/Settlement on the Lake of the Bird".
