The Theme of Nikopolis is a military-led state led by the Strategos, Alexios Justinian, and is located on the southern mouth of the Dunajec river. The Theme was founded by the Nikephorans who emigrated from a dying overseas Empire in a desperate attempt to preserve their culture and military traditions. The settlers established the Theme as a colony, yet over time Nikopolis grew into its own self-sufficient polity which could exert its own influence throughout the region it had settled in. Nikopolis' land expansion has been slow, with the Strategos preferring to bide his time and use the Empire's old knowledge to arm, equip, and train his forces. Nikopolis has likewise pursued semi-friendly relations with some of its neighbors, whom they label as 'Barbaroi', by engaging in trade.

Etymology

The name 'Nikopolis' comes from the Nikephoran language, with the name essentially meaning 'Victory City' or 'Victory Town'. Such a name was chosen by Strategos Alexios with the aim of inspiring his followers to pursue the glory which they had left behind in the Empire of yore.

History

The Nikephorans, as they would come to be known, migrated from an overseas Empire and settled on the westernmost coast in the region on the southern mouth of the Dunajec river. Led by Strategos Alexios Justinian, who had been a prominent military general in their home Empire, the Nikephorans established the camp-fortification of Fort Lithostroti. Trade is likewise achieved with the Lordship of Ledtshov, whom the Nikephorans trade bone to. The majority of Nikephoran history involves peaceful growth, including arming their Legionarios and Kataphraktoi.
